Velo 29 Winter Series -Week 1

The 4th category race started well for the Wheelers with Mick Storey coasting around towards the front of the bunch. Alas Mick’s race ended prematurely when a touch of wheels left him with a couple of broken spokes.

The race also ended in drama for Ian Cowen. It looked as though Ian had finished in second or third position in the bunch sprint for the line only for him to be told that his time hadn’t been registered because of a faulty timing chip. Luckily Adam Brooks of Manilla Cycling had been videoing the finish on his phone. The video was shown to the event organiser, Richard Williamson, who said he would sort things out.

All the CWCC riders finished the event. Dave Kirton and Martin Brearey finished in the bunch with the rest of the CWCC contingent – Richard Danks, Anthony Moy and Fahmi Faraz not too far adrift. Anthony had an eventful first race after being forced off the track at one stage. Congratulations all round.

The second race, the E/1/2/3/4 event was contested by the same group of CWCC riders plus Dave Williams who’s trying to regain his race fitness. This was a pure war of attrition with the wind getting up and the rain coming down more and more heavily as the race went on. Tired legs meant that one by one riders abandoned with only Mick “never say die” Storey managing to finish the event.

The next event in the series is in two weeks time

Charity Ride Middlesbrough to Yeovil

Yeovil Cycling Club have approached us for some help with a charity event they are staging in April. Around 50 cyclists will be riding from Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium on Monday, 28 April and arriving at Yeovil’s football ground prior to kickoff on the following Saturday (3 May) for the game with Middlesbrough. They are doing the ride for a number of charities including Prostate Cancer UK.

They will leave the Riverside Stadium at about 7 am to ride to Northallerton and then to Leeds on the first day. The will have a route but if any club members are free they would love some guides to get them to Northallerton.

Any volunteers?

Monday Night Prissick Adult Training Sessions

Sorry it’s late notice, as things often are with the Cleveland Wheelers! Due to popular demand I have made arrangements for the Monday night Prissick adult training sessions to resume this Monday 20th January and continue on through till 24th March.

These will be mixed ability training sessions, we will probably up the pace a bit from the group ride skills we were doing last year but we will keep ability groups so don’t be put off coming down to join in. The sessions will be 7.30 till 9 pm following the kids training. Cost will remain at £3. If you can all try and get there for 7.15pm so that we can get you signed in and get straight on the track for 7.30 to maximise the time.

Marcus Smith will be running most of the sessions with myself and Graeme Tate making the occasional appearance plus Michelle Roberts, work depending, and guest appearances from John Kelly junior who is extremely good at shouting at us all  to order!

Once the light nights arrive we can revert back to the Tuesday night runs from Great Ayton starting 1st April.  As always keep an eye on the Wheelers Facebook page for weekly updates and cancellations due to weather.
