The Cleveland Wheelers/British Cycling “Summertime Challenge” is a series of 4 events taking place over the next couple of months (see calendar for details).
The events consist of a series of age-related races, with skills courses and cycling games taking place on another part of the circuit to keep the children entertained while they wait for their race event. Medals are awarded for the 1 – 2 – 3 in each race category and every competitor goes away with a prize.
Last night was the first round and proved to be very successful with more than 40 children taking part, and with some competitive racing in almost every age group.
The winner in the under 8s was Ewan Whiting (SWCC), 2nd was William Rowan (SWCC) and 3rd was Matthew Best (Manilla).

The winner in the U10 was Joshua Hewitt (SWCC), 2nd was Daniel Thompson (CWCC) and 3rd was Aiden Colmer (CWCC)

The winner in the U12 was Isabelle Mayes (CWCC), 2nd Stacey Williams (CWCC) and 3rd Holly Sanderson (CWCC)

The winner in the U14 was Holly Dixon (CWCC), 2nd Finlay Davies (CWCC) and 3rd Felix Buckley (SWCC)

Finally, the winner in the U16 was Stephen Bailes (CWCC) followed by Niamh Stinton (CWCC)

Many thanks to all those children who turned out and made it a great event, and thanks to all those who gave of their time to help organise and run the event.
See you all again on the 10th July.
Many people are very familiar with League 2000 but equally there will be a lot who don’t know what it’s all about, so this is by way of explanation and also a photo journal of a typical night at L2K.

Basically, it’s a kind of stage race held at Prissick over the space of a few hours covering 12 Monday evenings from April to August (roughly, but not exactly, every 2 weeks).
There’s a skills course, a time trial and finally a handicapped road race (your handicap being based on your TT time), with points awarded for each stage to give an overall score on the night. These scores are added up week by week over summer to give an overall league table. Naturally, being open to children aged 4 to 16+, the league is split into age categories.
League 2000 has been running for over 20 years now, bringing pleasure to up to 100 children per session and being the launch pad for many of the region’s cyclists. It would not exist without the dedication of its full-time organisers and their on-the-night helpers and marshals who are drawn mainly from Cleveland Wheelers and the parents of the children taking part, all on a volunteer basis.
Hopefully this post this will encourage those who have children who they feel would benefit from and enjoy the activity to bring them along, and equally to encourage those who can spare a Monday night now and then come along and volunteer.

British Cycling are running junior track sessions over the Easter holidays on Thursday 20th April. There are rides for beginners (no track experience) and for intermediates (some track experience). Bike hire is available and the sessions cost £5 booked in advance or £6 on the day.
Note: This is for the Velodrome, not the Cycle Circuit.

As part of the continuing recognition that Steve Binks is deservedly getting for his 40+ years services to local cycling, he recently received the British Cycling Special Award, one of only four awarded nationally. It was of some satisfaction to Steve that his old friend Steve McIntosh from Barnesbury CC also received an award, meaning two of the four went to local cycling clubs, showing the dedication that we have within our region.

Well done to Steve (and to Steve)
