Evening Series 2020 Awards

As circumstances prevented us from having a prize presentation evening this year we have decided that tonight we will hold an impromptu presentation evening following on from the Evening Series.

It will take part in the salubrious setting of the Seamer Road Gravel Pits at approximately 7.20pm. As you may or may not remember whether or not you won a category last year it promises to be a suspenseful evening!

If you’re unable to ride home with a cup or plaque in your saddle bag, don’t worry, the club will happily hang onto it for you and pass it on at a more convenient moment.

C & S Tyres Circuit Of Welbury

Friday 13th August saw the running of the Tyne Tees Road League’s “C & S Tyres Circuit Of Welbury”. Many of the region’s top teams were in action, including a good turn out from Cleveland Wheelers, both from the Catley Lakeman/CWCC RT and from an enthusiastic group of “amateur racers”, some racing for the very first time.

The Open (“Elite”) race was won by Catley Lakeman/CWCC rider Matty Dobbin with Ross Turner of Fietsen Tempo in second and Aaron Preston of Catley Lakeman/CWCC in third.

The Masters/Novice race was won at a canter by Dave Lawson of Fietsen Tempo with Chris Mather of Derwentside CC in second and CWCC’s Peter Gunn (the smirking assassin) in third. Luke Robinson of Fietsen Tempo picked up the junior win.

Many, many thanks to Marcus Smith for getting this race on. Organising a road race is no easy task, especially now, and it was greatly appreciated not just by CWCC but by all the teams in the region. A great night was had by all who attended and hopefully the event can re-establish itself in the region’s racing fixtures.

Here is a link to a gallery of photos from the night, all taken on the start/finish line by CWCC secretary Steve Tilly in “burst mode” to hopefully give a real feel for the action. Feel free to download any photos you want for your own personal use, feel free to credit CWCC in any that you do use.

C2C2C Challenge Ride – 12 December

For those who haven’t seen this elsewhere.

Andy Curson writes :=

Hi all…tomorrow, Saturday 12 December, myself and a great team around me will attempt the C2C2C challenge ride from Saltburn to Morecambe then back again, raising money for Bowel Cancer UK.

Before things get too ‘busy’ tomorrow, I would just like to say a few thankyou’s…. .

Firstly to the amazing team and club members who despite the conditions have selflessly said they would like to help? They include Toby Tanfield, Aaron Preston, John Kelly (Jnr), Lee O’Leary, Dan Waring, Marcus Smith, Ryan Murray, Ian Fryett, Peter Gunn, Eoin Carroll and Hilton Armstrong. Unfortunately, due to COVID regulations I had to limit it to two groups, but would also like to thank Martin Kendrew and Tom Pugh for putting themselves forward in case of anyone dropping out.

I would also like to thank Dave Kirton and Shaun O’Shea. Due to injury niggles they were unable to ride however instantly said they would like help as a mechanical back up vehicle for the day.

Thanks to all who offered to bake cakes, loan lights etc…I think we are all OK but your generosity and willingness to help is truly appreciated!

After realising my wheels were just about shot, thanks to Harry Tanfield for loaning me a pair of his HUNT wheels, last minute for the ride.

Thanks also to all who have sponsored – so far, £10,300 has been raised for Bowel Cancer UK, which is absolutely incredible.

With everyone pulling together like this it makes me proud to be a member of the Cleveland Wheelers and part of such a great club!

We had a practice ride last weekend, riding to the British Cycling protocol so hopefully everything will run smoothly.

Anyone who would still like to sponsor, just go to ‘Just Giving Andrew Curson’. Everyone who sponsors will automatically be entered into a raffle with prizes that include an INEOS jersey, signed by Luke Rowe. A signed AG2R Mondiale bidon, cap and Vuelta race number by local cycling legend Harry Tanfield. A Beefeater Bend cycling jersey (which can be signed or unsigned 🤣), plus many more prizes – see below. Finally, we will be arriving back into Saltburn approximately 19:30-20:00 on Saturday evening, so if you’re down that way it would be good to see some smiling faces to welcome us back home after such a long day (obvisouly observing social distancing guidelines).

Thanks again everyone and stay safe, Andy.

UCI Road Calendar 2020

We’ve put the revised pro racing calendar on the website courtesy of The Inner Ring.

It’s under the COMMUNITY tab at COMMUNITY/UCI Road Calendar.

Don’t forget it’s Milano Sanremo today (Sat 8 Aug). It’s got a much changed parcours this year but still includes the iconic climbs of the Cipressa and the Poggio making for an exciting last hour of racing
