Fixie/Single Speed Ride – Saturday 24 March 2018

There has been some debate regarding this ride over the last day or so. This is to hopefully clarify the situation.

The ride will take place from the car park at Great Ayton with riders meeting at 9:50 am for a 10:00 am start.

It will not be going to the velodrome, in fact the track session has been cancelled. It will stick to its originally advertised format, viz a social jaunt on fixed or single speed steeds through the North Yorkshire countryside finishing up at a local cafe for replenishment; and before anyone asks – you don’t have to be a club member to take part.

Could you please pass this information on to those who you think may be interested but  haven’t got access to the web/Facebook?

The Bealach na Ba

Many of us work off cycling ‘to do’ lists don’t we? For me, along with the Ventoux at some point, the Bealach na Ba has been on my cycling ‘must do’ list for quite some time. For about 12 years in fact, which was the last time I ventured into this part of the Highlands of Scotland en route to Applecross, then Torridon. At that time, when travelling by car, there was no one attempting it by bike, nor was there the previous time I’d been over it. ‘Next time I’m up this way I must bring my bike’ I thought. In those 12 years a lot has changed, I’m older for a start! Mitigating against this bikes are generally lighter and have lower gears available fortunately for me. What I didn’t expect to see was a lot of cyclists toiling up it in mid October, but there again cycling has boomed, the 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs rates it ‘the Holy Grail, the toughest and wildest climb in Britain’. So is it?

CWCC Trip to Kettlewell

Next weekend, the 15/16 October, is the away weekend to Kettlewell. This event was an instant sell out, the YHA there has only 29 beds and they were taken almost straight away.

There will be two groups setting off from Great Ayton on Saturday morning after tea/coffee and snacks to prepare the riders for the road ahead.  A medium group heading out via Middleham on a route of approximately 60 miles and a fast group heading out through Bedale, Masham, Grassington covering approximately 75 miles. Both rides converge at Kettlewell YHA around 17:00.

The aim of the trip is more of an end of season social event where we can have a laugh and joke with liked minded people, enjoy a mid ride coffee stop, and compare stories of the season over a beer in the evening. We will be eating at the recommended ‘Kings Head’ in Kettlewell…and there will be a pre-dinner quiz prepared by Marcus.

On the return trip the fast group will come back via Hawes over the Buttertubs and back down through Swaledale. The medium group will be returning via Aysgarth, Redmire, Grinton Richmond then home.

Claire and Stewart Tanfield have kindly offered to support the ride – transporting all baggage to and from Kettlewell.
