Club membership hits 400

Hi wheelers. Membership has just hit 400 last night after we had two adults plus a juvenile join up. Impressive figure. We’re bigger than most clubs when you compare to cycling weeklies club of the week.

It is a slightly false figure though as there are still 200 members to renew their membership before it expires on 31st Nov, this number also includes kids who’s parents need to let me know their child is remaining with the club.

Thanks to Everyone who has renewed so far. For the rest of you, follow the link below and press on “become a member”. Kids parents just need to message me to let me know their child is staying for 2017. Beginning of December I will be removing none renewed members from e mail group and face book members page. Thanks, Dave k

Mountain challenge rides. 22nd May. 9am. Ayton

Hi wheelers. It’s time for the next and possibly the most difficult of our challenge rides this weekend. The mountain challenge. This Sunday 22nd. Departing Ayton tourist info car park at 09.00. £1 entry. 5hrs cut off time. Finish Fletchers farm. All welcome including none club members.
This year we have 3 routes. Standard, plus and killer! I tasked paul christon earlier this year with the job of making the long route more difficult, and he certainly has. I don’t think we could have possibly crammed many more difficult hills in to such a short distance. All routes now take on the newly resurfaced Gribdale, this will help to thin the riders in to ability groups immediately to help with the ride safety. This road has 2 gates unfortunately so please could the last rider close the gates, sorry about that!
For anyone who hasn’t done a Cleveland wheelers challenge ride before? These are not lead rides. Part of the challenge is to navigate your way around the course and complete it within the set time. Q sheets will be available at the start. There is a link below to the information on the website, Thanks to John Kelly snr for all his work updating the website info. Please study the information provided and choose your route with caution. Be warned that the killer route is very difficult and amongst many other climbs takes on street, caper, Chimney bank and Blakey bank. You have to be pretty confident about your abilities to take on the killer route and complete within 5hrs, You have been warned!
Other than all the hills it should be a great day. Weathers not looking as good as it has been although if it’s cooler this may be of help. Please try and be at the start no later than 08.45 for signing on.
See you all there, thanks, Dave Kirton.

Mountain Challenge

P.s. For anyone not taking part, we are looking for volunteers to help John Kelly with the start signing on and finish as Brian Beevis might not be able to officiate for this one. Also possible photos on gribdale? and being really cheeky would anyone consider opening and closing the Gribdale gates for us?

Evening series 12th May

Hi all, for anyone that is unaware the evening series is back on the seamer course tonight. Mike Cole has been assured that the road will be back open by this afternoon. Mike is checking the course at 5.30pm. If it’s still closed then he’s starting and stopping the TT either side of the roadworks.
Sign on at the gravel heaps as usual between 6pm and 6.30pm. £4. Have a good ride. Dave k

Tuesday night social / training rides. Start 29th March. 6pm Ayton, mixed abilities,

Hi all, Tuesday night social / training rides will be starting tomorrow night, 29th March. 6pm at Ayton tourist info car park ready for 6.10 set off. All welcome and all abilities. I won’t be putting a weekly notice on the website, just assume it’s on unless the weather is terrible. I will put my weekly ride idea on the face book page though.
We won’t have a lot of time this week, maybe an hour then ride home so please remember your flashing lights. I’m going to lead a short hilly ride out to Easby, towards Kildare, then right up and over to Baysdale. Hill repeats for the faster riders, just to the top for steadier riders. Nice tempo training, no racing.
Alternative group could do anti clockwise Easby loops or a ride out in to the lanes. Whatever you all fancy.
I’m keen to prevent it all turning in to a race like it did for the first couple of weeks last year. I was as guilty as anyone drilling myself on the front around Easby then blowing up after 2 laps! So I would like to appeal for calm. See you all there.

Thanks, Dave

Northallerton 50 challenge ride. Sunday 20th March. 09.00 depart Marton shops

Hi those of you who are taking part in the Northallerton 50 challenge ride on Sunday. Just a few notes to consider for the ride.

1, the route has been amended slightly since last year. After taking the left hand turn at the crossroads at the top of Bullamoor and descending down to Brompton where we turn right, instead of continuing on to Ellerbeck we are now going to take the left turn just out of Brompton towards long lane crossing, then turn right before the crossing and head up the hill through the farm to rejoin the road to East Harsley. Then back East Rounton, Hutton Rudby, Stokesley, Easby lane, finishing at Fletchers farm Ayton. Actually 57miles with an extended 4hr 15 cut off.

2, unfortunately it appears that the road between Scorton and Northallerton is to be closed at Great Langton. To go around would mean turning left at Ellerton Lake which is quite a detour, so I’m going to risk it and suggest you all dismount if necessary and walk past the roadworks as pedestrians. There was also a road closure approaching East Rounton the other day, but they assured me it would be open by this weekend. If you encounter problems then can the experienced riders make a decision as to what to do. If you have to back track around then of course I will get Brian to extend the cut off time.

3, It’s not a race!!!. However if it was a race? I would suggest it finishes at the Stokesley sign approaching from Hutton Rudby, then continue on riding neutralised to Fletchers farm. We don’t really want riders speeding through Stokesley then racing up the farm track at Fletchers just so that they can sign Brian’s sheet! That would be just silly!

4, final one. If the fast riders wish to get their foot down straight away to spread out the riders in to ability groups then that would be welcome. But whatever happens please can all groups take care with keeping things tidy, particularly on the roll out, up level bank and out of Yarm to Worsal, we always receive criticism from motorists regarding riders 3 abreast and untidy on Leven bank.

Thanks, and sorry to lecture on. Please all enjoy the ride. Certificates will be available to those that want them at Fletchers farm. Thanks, Dave
