Where do you find it?
Yearby Bank rises from the village of Yearby near Redcar and heads towards the Village of Dunsdale near Guisborough. To get to Yearby you take the B1269 at the roundabout off the A174.
Description
A well known climb to those who live in the area as it was to me when I was growing up. Getting up it on your Raleigh Grifter or Chopper at age 10 was a real accomplishment! The road starts to rise straight after the village, maybe at around 5% to start with. Once past a road junction on your left this steepens to around 10% for about 100 metres before easing to around 8% as the road bears right. Then it kicks up slightly to about 10% again for the final section before levelling off quite quickly as you pass Park Farm.
The surface is good all the way and the climb itself is quite straightforward, it’s just a case of finding a pace that you can sustain and maintaining it. Although there are a couple of steepish sections they don’t last too long. It makes for a great descent too as it’s straight and quite smooth, if you don’t set the electronic speed warning sign (set to 30) just before the village then you’re not trying! 45-50mph is achievable with a tail wind.

Our Ratings and Comments
- Paul – 3 ‘Steady as she goes. Overall a good hill to practise your climbing skills on, a bit harder than Ormesby Bank but not long enough to really hurt. If you feel okay on this Clay Bank would be the next logical challenge.
- Dave – 4 ‘It’s a great training hill for riding home from work, it starts off steady and gets increasingly steep. It’s good idea to go over the top, turn left to New Marske and do three loops!’ (why is that a good idea? – Paul)
